Do gallery spaces have memories? That's the way it seemed at the American Academy last night, where monotone paintings and opaque fibreglass pipes with metal backbones struggled to erase memories of Richard Serra's series of monumental dark canvases exhibited here last winter. Those two galleries, with their powdery whitewashed walls and sky-high ceilings, seemed to reject last night's humble offerings, retaining hot dreams of Serra's pulsating images of nothingness. The drink was crap too.
