The American Century at the Whitney Museum was a fabulous exhibition. Itwas an education in Modern Art to view this exhibition. We learned about therelationship between Art and the society in which art is produced. It also showed us the enormous variety of artistic media and talent as well as the relationship between social change and art or art as the leading edge of social change. This was particularly impressive with respect to: Women's issues, sexual orientation, the definition of art, political activities in the U.S., consumerism, ecology, popular culture and its pressures on society, race, ethnicity, and technological innovation and change. It was awesome and amazing to see the variety of artistic expression and the variety and technical artistic competence of those in the art world and their sensitive attunement to the issues in the culture in which they produce their work.
