Review

Howard Arkley and his 'Home Show' were the Australian representatives at the 48th Venice Biennale 1999. The 'Home Show' was then exhibited at the University of Melbourne gallery, possibly to make a temporary temple for the Arkley pilgrimage, Why? On returning to Australia from Venice, Arkley, aged 49 died from a Heroine overdose in his suburban Melbourne studio. This unfortunate accident gave the Australian public, and more so the Australian art market a fresh 'art world overdose' to mourn and exploit - they were getting board with Brett Whitely, who was our last 'Heroine Hero'. Arkley's work is now the most sought after in the Australian art market, destined to spend the rest of its life in the storerooms of Christies and Sothebeys. Thankfully for those who admire and enjoy Arkleys work many of the best will remain in public collections, which brings us to 'The Home Show'. To describe 'The Home Show'I will take a qoute from the Howard Arkley PR team, 'Arkley's paintings examine the carefully detailed display of property and propriey in an Australian suburban house. The reassuring sterotypes of comfortable middle class style are exaggerated, and normiality is enlarged until it appears bizzare' In conclusion 'The Home Show' was good.
