Walking around Pompeii is strange. Picking over dusty streets, poking your head into dead peoples latrines, tittering at bits of body as if you thought they had only recently been invented. Something prurient, unpleasant about the activity.. how would Bolton look stripped this far back, maybe not so different.. stripped of all that messy human life. I felt like a carcrash Ghoul. There is a tender painting in rhe house of Veccia (?); A woman holds her seated lover's head with her hand and her eye as he enters her. There is a room full of small birds eating cherries: open mouthed fish, figs, angels. There are silent dogs.
