Review

Famous young, died young. Was it all worth it? Tv interviews with Haring show an earnest, loquacious, skinny young man in big glasses and a t-shirt. He looks like a contemporary contemporary artist. Based on his banally benign outpourings you would expect him to be a boring artist. Yet although his paintings and sculptures are a little unvaried , they are very pleasing and distinct from the work of other artists (besides perhaps Mr Penck). O how we need you now Basquiat, Warhol, and Haring. Why did you die? With your passing the last energy sagged from the dying body of art. Matisse and Picasso lived long and their old man's stuff gives art fuel. Haring was lively and mades lots of money and liked graffiiti and did it. His silly paintings are imaginative and use signs we can recognize like mickey mouse or tv sets or dollar signs. The colours look good together and he knows when to stop painting. Everyone is fucking and dancing. They look like African fabrics. The drips are nice, unexpected after seeing too much merchandise . We must fight evil ubiquitous alienating dollar capitalism. Hurrah Haring.
