Review

Moscow, the first room, makes you think this show is going to be amazing. El Lizitsky's Proun room takes you to outer space. Then we get the token inclusion of African Lagos, a sad bright blue room filled with junk. New York is a perverse attempt to make the bad apple seem boring and its art insignificant. Mediocre is Vienna. Paris not great, but A. Marquet's wintry scenes compel one to stand and wonder how brushy cityscapes can be so beautiful. Rio or was it Buenos Aires is colourful minimalism. London a poor survey of already badly dated stuff. Mumbay is ok but suffers from the curatorial misconception that non-western art should be contextualised by boring cultural artefacts. The whole show mirrors the Tate Modern's permanent problem: not enough good art.
