Review

Jiri Menzel's film of Hrabal's novel attracted a sell out crowd of bourgeioss and native tonguers. I had to get my ticket on the black market. Why are non-commercial cinemas so awful? Because they are so self-righteous, right on , and bossy. They exude an air of complacent satisfaction with their appreciation of unpopular films. But they are better than the thugs' pub I had fled from earlier having being enticed in to watch satellite tv football. I slept through the first film to prepare myself for the second. C.O.T. captures well the slightly annoying whimsy of the book. It is nicely photographed, and the scene with the stamps is delicious. Its atmosphere of casual but not sleazy sexual encounters seems like typical sexist male fantasy as women are plucked willingly like ripe cherries, and then resume their non-protagonistic roles. The ending is sudden and strong.
