Pollock -Movie directed by Ed Harris

Anyone who has seen Paul McCarthy’s Painter video will recognise Jackson’s antics. The tortured head holding alcoholic male artist has been so successfully lampooned that all we are left to believe in now are the paintings. The rest, the man’s myth, is history. We gain no insight into JP’s thoughts, he is just a set of actions that add up to a rather worthy tv movie style reanimation of old news footage and dates. Is there anything to understand about what painters do? They are perhaps banal people trying to follow patterns created by somebody else, Pollock – Picasso, the contemporary artist - either Hirst/Emin or some shy minimalist. And so sexist idiots make good paintings. Or do they? Ed Harris has made a movie that makes art and artists seem silly and boring.
