Andreas Gursky Retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art, New York until May 15 2001

Big photos of crowds and landscapes that let us wonder at our crazy world. Gursky should be in the pages of National Geographic not the Moma. Yeah fine Tilmans wins the Turner, Gursky et al in every gallery and museum. The best photo is of two of those massive stores/ out of town warehouseshops. ToysRus or something, with some phone cables in the foreground punctuated by red plastic buoys . It is the perfect image of what life looks like now . This is Gursky’s strength, technically perfect detailed photos of the world we would find hard to photograph using our APS cameras. But of course the world is odd when you see a chunk of it. Why are we so surprised?
