Review

The week before last 'In the Mood for Love' was released on video. There is much to revel in. Maggy Leung's wonderful wardrobe, the haunting melody of the title and the poetry excerpts that introduce different episodes to the story. These poems are taut elegies to the passing of beauty and intimate moments. Somewhat in the style of Cavafy but without the bars. Perhaps the most memorable aspect of the film is the open-ended conclusion of Tony Leung photgraphed amidst the architectural splendour of Cambodia. We see a boy-monk in saffron robes. A proleptic nod towards the horrors Indo-China had been enduring and was to endure with even greater force.
