Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam 2001

Amsterdam is pretty in the sunshine, its canals less melancholy than Venice’s, only its heart has been gutted by the hordes of uglies, like kids on a school trip, enjoying their conventional little vices.

You see those stoned Americans, probably their best people- at least perhaps they are a little curious, fuddling over the choppy Van Goffs. What do they appeciate with their underdeveloped aesthetic senses? The posters would do them.

There are too many of his paintings and they make each other look boring. Van Goch captured well a Dutch look- turned up nose, heavy eyes, bulbous lips, and his paintings have power when they are not too cute. The style is so apparent that I am not sure what I think.

On the ground floor, in the contextualising section, there is a beautiful painting by Corot of a reclining woman in a landscape, its title something like “ l’algerienne”. Don’t miss it. It is amazing.
