Amazingly, Kilburn festival (part of an SRB/regeneration drive - usual waste of money really) managed to be, well, just like a real festival! Workers beer company, dodgy food trailers, booming base for miles around and has-been ex-hippy saddoes on both stage and grass, and all on grass, come to that. Light-touch policing was much appreciated as all concerned puffed away. What's the point of this review? Well, it was really refreshing for me to go along expecting very little on a Sunday and realise that with a bit of music and a little bit of sun, people could simply have a good time and chill out. Gigs, ligging, massive weekend festivals - don't they all end up with more stress than fun? Instead, this provided exactly what was advertised, including Zion Train who the crowd TOTALLY loved, and Natacha Atlas who (mistakenly headlining) got a bit of a bad reputation but warbled away nicely, rather outshadowed though by the fantastic JC001, fastest rapper in the world and a guy with a lot of style. The winos alkies and bums of the Kilburn High Road got a place to hang out and feel central to what was going on, and for once it really felt like there was a neighbourhood around here. Shame it was on a Sunday and finished at 7pm, but you can't have everything.
