Mark Rylance: he is not sexy, that's a problem. He needs to grow up a bit, eat some steak, take some vitamins. He's too little, looks lost on the street, a mad old woman could knock on his door and he'd have sex with her. London looked bleak, full of old parked cars, skips, and barmy cockney ladies who wander past and say hello darlin' as he stands on his doorstep, checking out the view. All this other stuff, sandwiched round the sex scenes, bits of EastEnders, sitting on buses, The Glass Menagerie. She looked too big for him, the woman from Shallow Grave. I didn't recognise her without her white doctor coat, locked in the loft shining torches about. When really the whole thing is about that moment when she says "Condom" in a deep, serious way, they stop clutching desperately at one another, he fumbles with a packet then rolls one on... And she gives his willy an ice-lolly lick, once. I think the director may have wanted her to give him a deep-throat blowjob on camera, the back of her bobbing head wouldn't have been enough. She probably refused, can't say I blame her, this was the unhappy compromise. Oh some people from work are trying to read what I am writing over my shoulder... Ends//
