Review

If you haven't discovered this lot yet this is a good place to start. A bit on the melancholy side and the singer can sound a bit muffled a la Mr Blobby but for sheer delicate, gloomy beauty only Nick Cave's Boatman's Call album and the odd Leonard Cohen track can beat them. This one is a bit more stripped down than some of their lavish orchestral numbers, which is no bad thing because the layers of strings and horns was becoming a bit of a cliche. If you still hanker after that red velvet curtain effect try the second Tindersticks album or the third one (Curtains) or see them at the Albert Hall on Oct 12, with full orchestral backing! Might see you there.
