Mark Alexander at Antony Reynolds London 2001

Here is a painting that surprises you. A large round painting of fishes swirling into God's mouth. Mark's previous photorealism leaves you unprepared for this unusual blend of skill and imagination, but you can see it in the grisailled careful painting which is almost like a trompe l'oiel relief. One painting hanging alone is a good trick, but you can not be sure anything is that good unless you see two. Go see this weird and good painting, its meaning is not yet clear.
