Perhaps public school red trousers began as a reference to some military look now long forgotten, like shaven heads etc. They, les pantaloons rouge, are often seen as the first flowering of post-school clothing free choice made herd-like by limited society, and as an infallible badge of courage for our School-Apartheid brothers. Must we reaasess all our assumptions?
