Review

Why can only the French get away with (or successfully do) films about the most disgusting and depraved aspects of human behaviour? This film was impossible to watch. You felt sick most of the way through it. The characters in it were impossibly cold and inhumane and you felt like that when it finished. Mentally battered and highly anti-social. Good performances and a subtle portrayal of some of the more repressive aspects of French high culture. But it wouldn't be half so good, nor accepted, nor praised and rewarded with such critical acclaim if it wasn't French.
