My advice is to stay in Mestre and commute daily to Venice for a couple of thousand lire, one euro. Leave at dawn having wandered around polluting the canals with your vomit and pissing on the resident's doorways. The beauty is mostly in the train station because it is the only modern building in town. The tourists are alternatively vermin and a wonderous crowd, stay in the best hotel you can to avoid the uglier ones.

You can never relax because you are always seeking something, somewhere to pee, a nice place for lunch, a gift, dinner, a rest to give you energy for more, an empty stomach or mind, a satisfying sandwich, a coffe bar which is hust right. Holidays prove our inability to cope with the aesthetic.
