Velazquez, Manet and Picasso spent great many hours perfecting their techniques to be able to work fast. But, although Picasso painted fast he did spend considerable amount of time on his paintings repainting and in doing so creating layers of fantastic paintings. While watching him work I often wondered why didn't he stop sooner. But then I guess my judgement like yours is much easier satisfied.
