I love this, watched it twice now and the second time was even better. Basic plot, a young upper middle-class Englishman is on a night train from Ostend to Linz. The pretty young American woman who he first meets proves to be a miserable unknowable flop. The demanding old Viennese woman who seems to be at once his nemesis, and at the same time seduces him by breaking through his self assurance. The background of the train journey is a kind of red brigades counter cultural violence. It's all much subtler than this, and builds slowly and wonderfully to the moment where everything turns on its head, with the final conversation between the old lady and the young man. It is not shocking, or clear, just brilliant and intriguing like a long train journey should be. Buy it, copy it, find it, watch it. This is the best tv britain ever made.
