Review

Stuffed to the gills, perhaps because of the many artists appearing, every soul seemed thrilled by this salon hung mishmash of irony and ham-fisted figurative paintings (Tim Stoner, Phil Allen, Luke Gottelier, German variants, etc.). When Magritte went mad cow 50 years ago it was cool, when Picasso was old and scrubbed the paint on his cartoons it was fun, when Guston painted what he saw it was great. But this new crowd of painters just make you weary, seen it before, seen it done a million times better, can't you even try to do new stuff, rather than working with a safety net of precedent and easy painting pleasure. This show is an admission of defeat.
