Review

Sadly he is not a great painter. He appeals to the skill brigade, stupid plebs who never understood much after Manet, but he is just ok. Why you demand? Your idol shattered.

Because one of the most difficult elements in figurative painting is the edge. And he fails the test, he blurs it. The Renaissance, good painting before and after, can be judged on the edge alone, the best always found a way to do it, to make forms discrete without looking like they'd been stuck on. Leonardo fades the boundaries, but he doesn't just run a big soft brush over the whole surface like Richter does in every painting. Richter with all the freedom that photgraphy gives him, still makes ugly surfaces with ugly dead colours. It is not irony it is inability.

But I like him and his work is worth a look.
