Review

Why do intellectuals always denigrate television. It is the most important medium of the second half of the twentieth century. Its stories and characters sustain and enterain us. It should be studied, examined, its influence traced ( not just to find out whether teenagers have short attention spans from watching MTV). Is some august institute preserving the television programs of today. Are the academies promoting it. Of course not, like all great art it is free from official approval, and unnoticed in its depth and humanity. One day in the distant future, when some new form has superseded it, young eggheads in black polo necks will discuss the latest anthology of ER or Rady, Steady cook which has just been released but is scarce, only available in little backstreet tv shops.

That day tv will be recognised at the great art form it is, and tv will be a medium not a machine
