Review

A pleasant alternative to the tourist infested (self hatred, but I am a first class tourist, rather than second rate one) Prague. Quiet and mitteleuropean with just a hint of lost tragedies (a blue eyed man and his daughter told me ethnic Germans and Jews had been the city's motive force before the war, The germans were kicked out, the Jews, well, you know).

Recommended: very good spit roasted chicken. In fact it is much easier, in general to eat a good meal in Brno than in Prague or even Vienna. To do: architecture, contemporary art, walking, not much else, which makes it relaxing. Other recommended food: kebabs (gyros), hot dogs, knuckle of pork, goulash, mongolian steak, pizza, icecream. At night on a warm evening, when the sky is deep blue over the gothic cathedral, slip down an alley way, descend into a cellar and you will find the Brnoers are drinking the excellent Starobrno beer and dancing or listening to loud music. They party like gnomes. The casinos are not lively but novices may enjoy playing for low stakes.
