Review

This is quite beautiful, powerful, scary, subtle horror film that could never have been made in America. Instead it was made in Japan and is set in an old, dingy apartment block in a shitty surburb of some huge city. Its a much more scary than any haunted houses in the countryside. There are stains in the lift and on the ceilings and water drips down relentlessly. There is something in the room above and the mother is struggling to look after her 6 year old daughter in the face of economic hardship and pressure from her ex-husband to win custody. The music and the colours combine to take the viewer in to a tense, claustrophobic world where the supernatural seems seriously scary and real and there is no laughing at ridiculous special effects. Its a simple human story about loss and the fragility of the mother-daughter bond. Take your Mum and hold her hand.
