Review

Really much better than last year. The students had made a strong effort: highlights include, the dog paintings, electric circles, and some realistic surrealist landscape painting, and miniature plastic figures in front of spacescapes . Most of the paintings were badly hung, careless and crowded, or not busy enough to look deliberate (salon). Often the idea of being artists, i.e single mindedly pursuing one style or idea, seems to contradict the idea of learning. You wonder why they have not been more varied in their experiments, why settle down early to produce inferior versions of art. But it was more stimulating than the Royal College painting show because at least here at City and Guilds you felt a little openness and creativity had remained unleached from the students.
