Review

The sentimental obituaries lovingly mention his proclivity to fondle women, "his appetite remained undiminished". Or his unfashionable but noble stance against civil rights. Or that he bravely left the Democrats for the Republicans because he didn't believe black people should have the vote or go to white places.

Just because he lived to 100 and won lots of elections does not alter his bigotry or sexism one jot or tittle. That he represented the people of one of the states of America in the twentieth century speaks for the tragedy and barabarity of our world. He was bad, and it was bad people voted for him, and he lived a long time and never realised how bad he was. He was a bad man.
