Review

On the hottest day of the year, which wasn't the hottest day ever, the pond was spawning tourists in huge numbers.Still a quick dip in the bottomeless slime was refreshing and pleasurable despite the fascistic life guards protecting us from our own stupidity. Away from the water, the heath shimmered in splendid hot beauty, we took the risk of setting it alight and joining the flaming European crowd, with a dangerous disposable barbecue. Underneath a shady tree in the empty sea of golden grass, with all its ancient english Islands of like trees each hiding a few natives; piquant chicken, chorizos, and peppers, smoked in petrol charcoal fumes. Time stopped as food cooked and nothing happened but the sun. An idyll only ended when the hideous human instinct for action drove us to want to swim again. Alas the greedy frogs had used all the water and the pond was closed for business. A mistake: home on the slow sweating train, should have stayed til the sun died.
