Review

Matchstick men. Lowry was the best english painter of the last century. A genius. When you look at his paintings you see real people and places. This is hard to make happen in a painting, copying a photo doesn't normally accomplish this. His seascapes and portraits ( especially the woman with the ponytail) are shockingly good and contemporary. Alex Katz, Milton Avery, Vija Celmins: I see you all in stick-in-the-mud old Lowry. Lowry's reputation lives is the ghetto of curiosity, the outsider artist, the English eccentric. He is better than that, his painting is not the colouring in of images, but a brilliant technique of melancholy effect. Go to the Lowry, it's free and you can take a tram from Manchester, and soon they will be having a show of the entire 300 or more Lowry painting they have. http://www.thelowry.com/
