He's not eating anything for 44 days, but that seems hardly important. It's the spectacle you see. Why? Because there is beauty in the out of the ordinary, in the people drawn to the freak show, in the idea that a person can do something (a real person not an image on tv) which fascinates other people. The wonder which this quite stupid act causes, makes one question what effect a really amazing thing could have. His importance is in his proclamation of individual will and power, and he attracts those with none: losers, wannabes, and the dispossessed homeless.
