cosi fan tutte: a modern story of lovers deceived, emotions betrayed....the posters in the tube are a bit misleading. this is not a sensuous, lush and tragedian experience. the modernised version of cosi fan tutte is a comedy, light in plot and heavy in condecension to women. there was even an understudy of an understudy, a few of the main players being down and out with sickness. the set was underpopulated, seeming more like one of those minimalist and supposedly 'modern' renovations on tv home shows. the reason i normally like opera is that it is a leap of faith, borne upon the ethereal singing... and the audience is often asked to imagine the fat singer as a starving bohemian or a bosomy woman as a young prancing girl, and is willing to do so. however, everyone here suited their roles perfectly, and the only lack i had to redress was the singing. it was acceptable, the staging a bit wooden but alright, and the 3 hour length was nearly a stretch. i enjoyed myself somewhat, but as you can probably tell, i can only offer faint praise for an average opera.
