Review

I'll start with the white wine which was good: chilled, crisp and flavoursome; it was a surprise at a private view. The show consisted of one room with photos and expanatory texts about some sort of nuclear testing place in the Nevada desert, and another room where a promotional video for the arms testing company played. This project was conceived by the RCA curating course MA students, one of whom I asked about what the aesthetic of the show was. She seemed surprised (bored) by my irrelevant and perhaps annoying question, and answered that the photos were informational and that the texts were arranged and sized to show their equality with the images. Whilst admiring the impulse towards political art, the truth is, my truth is, that the photos and the texts were very boring to look at and read. The video was neither shocking (of course weapons companies make promotional videos with rock music soundtracks) or that funny. A one page article on the web or in magazine would be more informative than this show(to be fair they did have a computer in the gallery) and it seemed like a waste of the gallery space. There must be things more suitable for exhibition in white boxes in the East End, I know, how about provocative visual art. I look forward to the day Curating students reinvent the wheel.
