It seems appropriate, in the present cliamte, that I didn't see this show but am still writing a review of it. I met Gardner once, and he seemed less ironic than his realistic watercolours of horseplaying dudey hanging around young dumb all american friends and family. Probably I underestimated him, seeing his manners through the prism of my european snobbery, and mistaking surface for substance. I wonder whether he or his watercolours have changed. I doubt it.
