Review

This is a fantastic sporting event. Moaners say there are no good matches. Rubbish. England - Boks was thrilling. Even today Canada -Italy was tense and compellingly watchable. And this is the onyl the beginning, a prelude to the enormous dramas to come.

Why so good? Because rugby union is a great sport. Viscerally violent, smashing human flesh 'gainst human, blood flows, shirts ripped. Tactically beautiful 15 marshalled as if at Waterloo, tanks defending Alamein, one man kicks; a sniper at leningrad. And graceful as the ball moves smoothly through the air and the players dance and jink like ballet dancers.

No other sport has such variation and sheer physical and motive power.
