Review

Good book, bad translation. The prison slang comes out halfway between obscenity and jolly hockey sticks English, thus losing the intense subjectness of the narrator. After reading too much Gulag Archipelago this book seems slightly sanitized as well. One does not get the crushing awfulness of the whole. Cancer ward is a better novel. Ok still read it, perhaps before unabridged Archipelago.
