Autumn is here and for all you fungal-philes out there it truely is the season to be jolly. Although climate change has appeared to have shifted the hunting season somewhat, we have had enough rain to trigger their growth. The humble british mushroom can take its' place with pride alongside the worlds psilocyibes. Small in stature, when fresh, apart from tasting like the very earth its' self this shroom packs a punch. Personally I prefer to hunt in the 'local' hunting grounds as I find the communal ones to overcrowded. Hay Bluff at the foot of the Black mountains although guaranteed is becoming like a convention of short-sighted and clumsy, as hoardes of people appear to search the area bent double for those lost contacts. Scotland is by contrast fungal rich and hunter poor as it seems that only the most avid of searchers has ventured into the highlands collecting the bone coloured bundles of joy. Free to all, they can be a lesson in restraint, hard learnt but never forgotten. Taken in moderation they can provide a welcome respite from all other forms of abuse, with the main side effect being a sore face from crying with laughter. Remember not all fungus is so much fun so my advice would be to 'seek local knowledge' go with an experienced hunter, and unless you want your field to end up like the Black mountains, keep it to yourself. Happy hunting.
