Review

After having completed a 3-day training course as a healthcare assistant with the British Nursing Agency, I made my entrance onto the medical world by starting 2 7-hour shifts at a local private hospital. An older nurse showed me what to do, changing beds, collecting medicines and equipment, picking up and putting down patients or clients and walking up and down the ward. The consultants wore brown shoes, nurses black shoes. They gave me a white coat because I did not have the standard tunic; I was concerned for Brian Epstein who was dishonourably discharged from National Service for impersonating an officer. This involved taking a taxi and arriving at the barracks' gates dressed in a pin-stripe suit with bowler hat and being saluted by guard on duty. But I was sure to cover my ground with enunciations of comraderie and solidarity. I don't think that the running of the award would have been any different if I hadn't been there. Still it was comforting to know that people were getting better in between the tubes and bags.
