Review

Sceptical of political art I was pleasantly surprised to find that portraits in the age of uncertainty, was a refreshing change from other contemporary art clichés. Comprising of sixteen pieces, Claire Zakiewicz's work subtly evokes the viewer to aesthetically respond to political and cultural subjects allowing them to question their own inhibited preconceptions. With a sharp interest in public representation and an immersion in cultural diversity; portraits in the age of uncertainty confronts a fundamental questioning of historical issues and proceedings. The exhibition removes the; expected, and replaces it with the unexpected which consequently does not allow the viewer to escape answered or unprovoked.

Through the use of paint, collage and mono-print, C.Zakiewicz's work takes the viewer on a journey of emotions. The work is provocative and the viewer will not be able to bypass much of the imagery viewed. The exhibition is free and runs from November 24th to December 22nd at the Bricklayers Arms Pub in Shoreditch. After much anticipation for something that wasn't painstakingly pretentious or patronising, Portraits in the age of uncertainty wets the pallets of anyone on a quest for opening a new set of questions.
