Review

Following on from other recent experiments into the musical film (8 Femmes, Moulin Rouge, Chicagon, etc) Alain Resnais decided to dredge up an operetta from the 1920s and turn it into an excrutiating cinematic experience. If you saw 8 Femmes and liked it (as I did) do not assume that you will like this. I don't understand how someone could make a film this bad. The cast looks promising, with Audrey Tautou and Isabelle Nanty (from 'Amelie'), and the director had already made a successful venture into musical cinema with 'On Connais la Chanson'. The music is bad, the plot is predictable, half the cast can't sing and it drags on and on. However if you want to see some good French cinema, apparently Les Invasions Barbares is excellent. Although I think it's actually Canadian.
