Have you ever seen London at night from the window of an aeroplane? The city is a monster, with the dark snake of the Thames, at its heart. A sprawling, twinkling yellow light, a touch of blue here and there,. metropolis, never ending, dark spaces are scary places, parks at night, on and on as far as the eye can see from the small porthole. The city is a challenge and a miracle of ingenuity. And flying over it, we are gods, granted the greatest of all freedoms, to leave the ground, go above the clouds, see the curve of the earth, be lit by the sun when the earth is cold, all in that juddering tin plane racked by turbulence and trolleys.
