Review

Three years ago I developed a crush the moment Viggo Mortensen stepped on screen. I have no interest in the actor but the enigmatic character he created, Aragorn - and as the films progessed the auditoriums were packed not only with the usual collection of Tolkien fans, children to be entertained and the New Zealand tourist board but hundreds of women mesmerised by the fantasy played out in the piercing blue eyes of the hero, for it captured our imaginations, played upon all our desires, recreated an ancient time of battle scared warriors, honour and even unrequited love for in everyday reality we knew we were all destined to suffer the fate of Eowyn not Arwen. As we took our seats for the final installment the title implying three and a half hours of enchanted escape in heroics of Aragorn what did we get - too many hobbits not enough Viggo. Gutted.
