the first worrisome thing about this movie is all of its preceeding hype. the second thing that was potentially horrible was its all star cast - nicole kidman is distractingly beautiful and a bit out of the age range of her character, renee zellwegger was doing a good impression of the godfather overacting with a southern accent.
in the end, it was alright. not fantastic or as oscar worthy as miramax would have you believe, but okay in its own right, though i didn't shed a tear at its tearjerker ending (look away now if you don't like spoilers) - but you always know that that 'first' out-of-wedlock steamy night will usually be the last. the acting was nearly faultless from ray winsome, law and kidman - even jack white of the white stripes wasn't all that bad - but perhaps slightly lesser known actors would have allowed the audience to accept and be absorbed into the storyline more readily.
