Review

I actually managed to get a seat on the way back from work last night so settled down to read the day's Metro. District line always takes ages as it chundles along from West to East so it's nice to have a paper or book. Mid-journey I hear the man next to me say "Do you want something to read?" Directed at the man standing opposite him. A delayed reply - "erm..." Fearing a tube rage incident - "ANGRY COMMUTER HITS MAN FOR READING OVER HIS SHOULDER" - the whole carriage holds their breath. "Take this - you can only read one thing at a time anyway" says the seated man, proffering a portion of his Guardian to the astonished other...Everyone settles back down, though there is still a sense of unease as we are shocked by this act of kindness, especially the man who is now gratefully reading the paper. As they get off (they happen to want the same stop) the man returns the borrowed paper although the first guy seems quite happy to let him keep it (I suppose he only bought it for his tube journey anyway). And I am left there thinking...was that a random act of kindness...? And am I a cynical hard-nosed city dweller to be surprised...? Maybe he was just hitting on him (that lending him a paper business could have been a secret code or something...)
