Review

Weirdly I have now seen Jay Jopling and Maureen Paley here. Even cynical gallerists love Guston. Each time I go I bump into loads of people I know, usually passionate painters, and so I get distracted from what I came to think about. I find though ,that the stop and chats ( to coin a larry davidism) provide a new way of viewing the great paintings: as one attention wanders one catches with the corners of one's eye, a rectangular painting looking beautiful. And that this glancing look captures more than the strong stare stood full on in front of the painting.

Last night I dreamt that i had worked out a solution to my Guston question. But this morning the answer is lost again.
