apparently it was made up by Louis Diat at The Ritz in the big apple sometime between 1910 and 1920.
It's an excellent soup, you just sweat leeks,potatoes, onions, add stock. Liquidize. Then add cream if you want. Serve hot or cold.
I have made a version without cream, which I eat hot. And it's very soothing.
