With Guston and Greco, London is buzzing with great painting.
The beauty of this El Greco show made me ecstatic. There's so much beauty. It's tiring all this beauty. The painting are on fire, burning with diagonals, fantasy, zinging colour, visual invention, genius, madness, and more beauty.
He makes it all happen, he puts the paint on as though it matters, everything from sky to negligeed man, to the sides, the top and bottom, the edges of the canvas, his furious talent rages over every inch of the painting. The eyes of his figures are bright, his angels are convincing, and his portraits very sensitive, but that is not what inspires the ecstasy. It is there in the paint, somewhere buried in the painting of the picture,not sure what it is. But it hits, like Guston, and we thank him for it, and want to know and see more.
