Review

After minimal kitchen Judd, Brancusi is like walking into the ethno section of the home decoration shop.

Brancusi is ludicrously old fashioned, with his sleek simplifications of things, yet he makes easy sense. He shows how a part can be a whole, squeezing some more life out of figurative sculpture. The bird room is brilliant, with his aristocratic animals perching on their plinths, they look half car ornament, a bit fascist, and like some beautiful idea of the future that never happened. They are good because they make you think of the real beauty of birds.

The same goes for his bits of people, which are obviously classical and still charming, if without the danger we usually associate with art. When I retry Judd I will look more at Brancusi.
