VM seems to have a taste for decorative painting. Actually I quite liked Raqib Shaw's paintings. For a start they are imaginative and free which is always good. They are not transcriptions of photos or rehashes of other contemporary artists, which is also good. They do not strike one as wonderful paintings, but they have potential. The decorative technique is irrelevant, more pertinent is the ambition, which when laid bare is the freedom of painting.
