While you're right that immigrants (illegal and legal) are usually v motivated, the current situation with illegal immigration isn't good for anyone. If asylum-seekers an other immigrants aren't allowed to work legally, they will either have to live off the (low) benefits they get, or work illegally, thus risking exploitation and not paying taxes. At the moment people are forced into becoming second-class (non)citizens, with no labour rights, and forced into doing shitty low wage jobs. This problem should be tackled by eg having a 'sans-papiers' amnesty like they did in France, giving illegal immigrants legal status, or by allowing more economic immigration, which would stop people having to claim to be refugees when they are not actually fleeing persecution, which confuses different issues.
