I disagree and thought this fim was excellent. Yes, the gags are obvious - they are meant to be. I don't think Coppola "thinks it odd that foreign people speak foreign languages and pronounce English differently from Americans." It is obvious that the film is much more sophisticated than that. The cliches and sterotypes that punctuate the otherwise still and melancholy tone of the film, illustrate, very imaginatively, the extent of the characters' weariness. I've not seen it done before quite this way and was very much impressed.
